Description

A rich and decadent German Chocolate Cake with layers of chocolate and coconut pecan frosting.


Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, beat together cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and butter until creamy.
  5. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Stir in vanilla extract and buttermilk.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
  8. Pour in boiling water and mix until smooth.
  9. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  11. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  12. Prepare the coconut pecan frosting by combining coconut, pecans, and frosting ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.
  13. Spread the frosting between the layers and on top of the cake.
