Description

A comforting casserole filled with shredded chicken, rich black forest ham, and creamy Swiss cheese, topped with a crispy Panko breading.


Ingredients

  • 5 cups shredded chicken
  • 9 ounces sliced deli-style black forest ham
  • 8 ounces sliced Swiss cheese
  • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 6 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 ½ cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Spread shredded chicken evenly across the base of the baking dish.
  3. Layer black forest ham over the chicken.
  4. Place Swiss cheese on top of the ham.
  5. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, then mix in Dijon mustard, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper.
  6. Sprinkle in flour, whisking to form a smooth paste.
  7. Gradually add whole milk, whisking until the mixture is smooth and thickened.
  8. Pour the sauce over the cheese layer, spreading it evenly.
  9. Mix Panko breadcrumbs with softened butter and sprinkle over the top of the casserole.
  10. Bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes, until bubbling and golden brown on top.
  11. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving and garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

Make it ahead by assembling a day prior, refrigerate it, and bake as usual. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
